Armstrong's Rules
01
Loyalty
Organizations are loyal to no one; individuals are loyal to individuals.
Be loyal and align yourself with powerful people not fringe players or crusaders.
02
When to leave an organization
Leave or negotiate a promotion when things are going well.
Never leave when things are going poorly. Unless there are no other avenues.
03
Develop an edge
An “edge” is a superior ability that can be used to differentiate you from your competitors.
Use this “edge” when you need or want something.
04
Trust
Trust no one except your mother and keep and eye on her.
Beware of “brothers and sisters of the cause” who are here to help or say that, “we are all in this together.
05
Political Expertise
A skill and a wisdom that comes with experience; experienced politicians can slay you without you knowing it and will enjoy it.
Observe actions more than words.
06
Avoid crusaders
Crusaders live to fight for a cause, like finding the Holy Grail. They always meet heroic yet tragic ends. They believe in things that make talk show hosts wealthy.
Maintain your standards; some of your honour and a bit of your pride.
07
Life is not fair
Life is not fair, never has been and never will be. Refer to the “Edge” and “Crusaders.”
08
Passion
Find something to do that you are passionate about. If you are passionate, you are motivated, rewarded, talented and successful.
09
Know thy self
If you can determine what it is that is your passion. You will begin to know your talents and limitations. This knowledge will guide you through a career.
10
Golden rule
He/she who controls the gold makes the rules.
Try to develop an understanding of the “axis mundi” of an organization. E.g., family business
11
Success
Success and happiness are not the same thing. It helps to be successful but success does not guarantee happiness.
Making more money is not always the answer.
Be careful of what you wish for, it may just come true.
12
Mentors
Try to find a “mentor” someone you can trust.
Watch your mentor after a period to see if they are still on your side. See Trust.
Who is your best mentor?
13
Experience
Try to learn and gain from bad experiences. Chalk these things up to “Experience.”
What does not kill you will make you a stronger person.
14
Enjoy the Trip
Life is really a journey. Enjoy the trip. Try to be more patient.
When you play sports there are times when you need to run and times when some hesitation pays more dividends.
15
The Lazy Gene
Being lazy is deadly. It sucks the soul out of your life. You cannot take advantage of opportunities if your are not there.
Half of success is being in the right place at the right time or just showing up every day.
